The GEM Global Report is recognised as the most credible source of data related to global entrepreneurship among academics, policymakers, and international organisations. In February 2025, GEM Spain will host launch of the 2024/25 GEM Global Report, the iconic annual “State of the Art” update on entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship in the world. Organisations with a vested interested in entrepreneurship can be a strategic supporting partner for this high-profile report and launch event in the dynamic Spanish city of Bilbao.
What are the benefits of sponsorship?
Companies, governmental bodies and foundations sponsor GEM research for a number of different reasons:
- Be part of the world’s longest-running study of entrepreneurship – 25 years and counting!
- Provide governments and other stakeholders with robust data sets so that they can make key decisions that stimulate sustainable and value-generating forms of entrepreneurship while promoting healthy entrepreneurial ecosystems worldwide.
- Leverage the findings to strengthen messages on the change needed for entrepreneurship to take place in their particular communities of interest.
- Generate visibility via the GEM network’s media coverage, thought leadership analysis, and reports (the most viewed GEM Global Report generated over 140,000 unique downloads, the GEM website generates close to 1 million pageviews each year and the research has been cited in more than 1,000 peer-reviewed journals).
What is the GEM Global Report?
GEM is the only global research source that collects data on entrepreneurship directly from the source – individual entrepreneurs. The data relates to the characteristics, motivations, ambitions and social attitudes of these entrepreneurs. Some 140,000 individuals are surveyed each year and the number increases with every additional National Team (we have a 10% increase in teams for 2024). The GEM Global Report also features GEM's National Entrepreneurship Context Index (NECI) which evaluates the entrepreneurial context of a particular economy. Results are based on the scores provided by national experts to a set of Entrepreneurial Framework Conditions for each GEM participating economy in a given year. The index is an invaluable tool for benchmarking against other entrepreneurial frameworks, either regionally or globally. The United Arab Emirates has placed number one the past three years.
Over the past quarter century, the GEM Global Report has delved into how entrepreneurship has been impacted by major events such as the 2008 financial crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the conflict in Ukraine. We also explore new topics relevant for the times. For example, in our most recent report, we provided analysis on how entrepreneurship impacts the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Global Report authorship is made up an expert team of entrepreneurship researchers from our global GEM consortium of some 400 researchers. Some 60 GEM National Teams will be involved in the 2024/2025 Global Report.
What is a GEM launch event?
Over the years, GEM Global Report launch events have been held at different cities around the world. Most recently, the launch was hosted by GEM Morocco thanks to the support of the Kingdom of Morocco’s Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation; and the Ministry of Economic Inclusion, Small Business, Employment and Skills. In 2023, GEM Switzerland hosted the event at the School of Management Fribourg (HEG-FR) while in 2022 we were in Dubai, hosted by the UAE Ministry of Economy and GEM UAE at the iconic and highly innovative venue for Expo 2020.
Key audiences that engage with this prestigious event include policymakers in the region, academic researchers, decision-makers at international organisations, entrepreneurs, journalists, and other entities that are most relevant to the entrepreneurship ecosystem in the host country. The 2025 Annual Meeting and Global Report Launch will take place in Bilbao, Spain.
Why will the next Report Launch take place in Spain?
GEM is a one-stop shop for everything you need to know about entrepreneurship in a country. In Spain, policymakers leverage this benefit not only at the country level, but also through analysis on entrepreneurship in every Spanish region and even some sub-regions. Within GEM Spain, there are an astonishing 27 different regional teams and hundreds of researchers from universities and research centres. For these efforts over the years, Spain was recognised with an award for being the most developed ecosystem network within GEM.
Given the exceptional work of GEM Spain and the fact that it is a demonstration model for how GEM can impact entrepreneurship nationally and regionally, and the importance of Spain within Europe, the GEM/GERA Board selected GEM Spain as host of the organisation’s signature event of the year. This is an opportunity for Bilbao to truly shine and showcase some of the great work that is happening in the region as it relates to entrepreneurship.
