You are hereby invited to a special GEM training and publishing workshop - November 16-19, 2015, in Barbados, to be led by Thomas Schøtt (GEM Denmark).
Purpose and Content
The purpose of the workshop is to train GEM researchers in analysis of GEM data for publication. Training focuses on specifying hypotheses, testing them statistically, and reporting results for academic and policy audiences.
Format
Each participant selects an own research question about people’s entry into entrepreneurship or about entrepreneurs’ work, and researches it by analyzing GEM data in SPSS, with guidance and consultation by the instructors, resulting in a study suitable for academic presentation and publication. The instructors will create customized data from GEM Adult Population Survey and National Expert Survey, and other sources.
Agenda
The agenda for the four days is proposed as:
Day 1:
- Lecture (by Thomas) and discussion of analyses of adults’ entry and involvement in entrepreneurship.
- Lecture (by Thomas) and discussion of analyses of entrepreneurs’ work.
- Participants select their own question for research during the workshop, individually or in small teams.
- Training in data-handling and testing hypotheses about association between two variables (cross-tabulation, comparing means, correlation). Thomas serves as consultant.
Day 2:
- Participants address their own research question by association between two variables.
- Training in regression (linear and logistic, also with interactions).
- Participants address their own research question by regression (Thomas serves as consultant).
- Participants present their first tests for constructive discussion.
Day 3:
- Training specification of hypotheses about influence of framework conditions upon individual behavior.
- Training hierarchical modeling of influence of macro-level conditions on micro-level behavior.
- Participants perform and present their further tests for constructive discussion.
Day 4:
- Participants test own hypotheses about macro-conditions influencing micro-behavior.
- Participants present their complete analyses and outline of paper for constructive discussion.
Learning Objectives

Prerequisites
Each participant selects an own research question about people’s entry into entrepreneurship or about entrepreneurs’ work, and researches it under guidance by the instructor in the course, using SPSS (you must have SPSS on your laptop), resulting in an analysis suitable for academic presentation and publication.
