In 2020, Alberta and other Canadian provinces and territories were hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. This report examines the COVID-19 impacts on entrepreneurship in Alberta using data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM). The report covers the following areas: • Business Cessations and Start-ups • Effects on entrepreneurs • Government Response to the pandemic • Effects on Owner Managers • Effects on Intrapreneurs • Receipt of Government Assistance Recommendations 1. Target support for Alberta entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs seeking to develop new opportunities arising during the pandemic. 2. Further support owner-managers who have growth aspirations but cannot pursue new opportunities while focusing on their core business activities during the pandemic. 3. Assess the factors delaying Alberta entrepreneurs in getting their businesses operational during the pandemic. 4. Further assess the pandemic-related government support provision to determine if OM-led businesses in certain sectors are disadvantaged. 5. Further study necessity-driven entrepreneurship in Alberta, including the different profiles of necessity-driven entrepreneurs.
