The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) Austria 2025/2026 shows that Austria offers a generally supportive environment for entrepreneurship, ranking 26th out of 53 countries and 14th out of 22 European countries. The country’s main strengths are its excellent physical infrastructure, strong public support programmes, effective research and technology transfer, and a strong commitment to sustainability. However, Austria continues to face challenges in entrepreneurship education at school level, access to private growth financing, bureaucratic and regulatory burdens, and support for female entrepreneurs. The report also highlights cultural barriers such as a strong preference for secure employment and a persistent stigma surrounding business failure. Overall, Austria has a solid entrepreneurial foundation but needs further reforms to improve its international competitiveness and foster a more entrepreneurial culture.
